Dragonkind Cooldown: What the 4-Hour Wait After You Burn Means
If a dragon burns you in Dragonkind, you cannot try again straight away. Here is what is known about the wait, what players report seeing, and what nobody has explained yet. This is an unofficial fan guide.
What is confirmed
- The wait is a few hours, reported as four. The author's official FAQ only says you wait a few hours. Press coverage of the launch gives the number: four hours before you can try again. We use four hours. See the Dragonkind game guide for the basics.
- There is no limit on attempts. The author's FAQ says you can keep trying until you bond with a dragon.
- Some burns are random. Rebecca Yarros has said there is roughly a 10 percent chance of being incinerated whatever you choose.
What players report seeing
Players in Facebook groups describe a countdown after a burn, with posts such as three hours still left on the cooldown. We have not seen the screen ourselves, so we cannot describe exactly how the timer looks. The official sources do not publish the wait time as a rule, so it could change.
What we do not know
- When the four hours start. The reports we found do not say whether it counts from the moment you burn or from when the page loads.
- Whether every kind of failure costs the same wait. Nobody has published a test that separates a random burn from a bad choice.
- Whether the wait is per account or per device. The game signs you in with an email code, so it is probably tied to your account, but this is a guess.
- Whether it can be skipped. We have found no official way. Fan sites that offer instant replays are not the official game.
Is a burn your fault?
Not always. Because roughly one run in ten ends in a burn however you play, a single burn tells you very little. Players also report needing many attempts for the rarer dragons. Our page on how to get a black dragon covers what players report, and the approach rules for each dragon color covers what the book says.
What to do while you wait
- Write down what you chose. If you reach the same scene again, you will know what you tried.
- Practise with no wait. Our free practice run lets you retry at once and has a small timer you can start when you burn. Its dragons and story are invented, so it is a rehearsal, not the official game.
- Learn the words on your screen. See Dragonkind terms explained.
- Check your login. If you cannot get back in, see what to check when the login code does not arrive.
