Dragonkind Game Guide: How to Play, the 4-Hour Wait and What Your Dragon Means

An unofficial fan guide to Dragonkind, the free Threshing game at dragonkind.com. It opened on October 1, 2026, two days after the Threshing Day collection and on the same calendar day as the Threshing in the books. You walk into the Vale as a cadet and a dragon either bonds with you or burns you.

How to get in

Open dragonkind.com, enter an email address and type the one-time code it sends you. There is no password and nothing to pay. It runs in the browser on phone or computer. A full run takes about ten minutes.

Your Wing, Section and Squad

Before the Vale, the game assigns you a Wing, a Section (Flame, Claw or Tail) and a Squad, for example First Wing, Claw Section, Third Squad. This is your place in the riders' quadrant. As far as players can tell, it does not decide which dragon you get.

What happens in the Vale

You move through the Threshing scene by scene, choosing how to carry yourself in front of the dragons. The books give riders a few rules of approach. Players are still testing how closely the game follows them, so treat these as the book rules, not a guaranteed route:

  • Green dragons: approach with lowered eyes and wait. Do not back down once you have committed.
  • Red dragons: never meet their eyes. Players report approaching from the left.
  • Black dragons: the most discerning of all, and the rarest result.

If a dragon chooses you, you get a result card. If not, you are burned and the countdown starts.

The 4-hour wait

When you are burned, the Vale closes for you for four hours before you can try again. That figure comes from press coverage of the launch and matches what players report; the game itself does not display the rule anywhere, so it could change. Player reports on Reddit and Threads put the average at three or four attempts before a dragon bonds, so a first-try burn is normal. Use the wait to work out what you would do differently: our free practice run has no wait, or take the Fourth Wing dragon quiz to see which book dragon fits you on paper.

Why the same choices give different results

There is no single correct path, and some of it is luck by design. Rebecca Yarros has said that roughly one run in ten ends in incineration no matter what you choose. Beyond that, players who picked the same options have reported different outcomes, and tactics that worked for one person (including, by several accounts, shouting at a dragon) have backfired for others. Treat other people's walkthroughs as ideas, not answers.

One theory doing the rounds says entering the Vale with your phone at 76 to 90 percent battery makes a black dragon more likely. Nobody has confirmed it and the developers have not commented. We list it because people ask, not because we believe it.

How to read your result card

A bond gives you a card with your dragon's name, colour, tail type, sex, age and lineage. The tail types are the ones from the books: swordtail, daggertail, clubtail, scorpiontail and morningstartail. Signets are not part of the game yet; the result currently ends at bonding, with signets expected in May 2027. Yarros has also said the site hides several easter eggs and that there are plans to expand it, so this guide will change as the game does.

Want to know what your colour says about you? Our guide to every named dragon in Fourth Wing covers each colour line, and the signet quiz will give you a signet while you wait for the game to add them.

Questions

Is Dragonkind free?

Yes. It needs an email address for the sign-in code, and nothing else.

Can I skip the 4-hour wait?

Not in the official game. The timer runs on your account. Some fan sites offer their own instant-replay simulators, which are not the official game.

Does Dragonkind spoil Threshing Day?

The game is built around the same day the book is, but it is its own short story about you, not a summary of the book.

Practice the Threshing, no wait Which book dragon would bond with you? Would you survive the Threshing?
